Why certified skincare matters this earth day

Looking on the Bright Side

As we celebrate Earth Day 2024, I am a bit saddened that we are not further along. I have been celebrating this day for over 25 years and I was not sure how much progress big buisness and government have made - so I looked it up, and was positively surprised!

For example - According to the World Health Organization (WHO), global urban air pollution levels have decreased by approximately 25% since 1990. This reduction is attributed to stricter regulations on vehicle emissions, cleaner energy sources, and improved industrial practices.

There has also been The global coverage of protected areas has increased significantly over the past two decades. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the total area of protected land worldwide has nearly doubled since 1990, reaching over 20 million square kilometers in 2020. This expansion helps safeguard critical ecosystems and biodiversity.

Choosing with your wallet

You have heard me say this many times but I will say it again: How you shop is a vote for the world you want to live in and who you are supporting. This Earth day I want to remind you that choosing Certified Organic Products helps support a standard of operating, and allows you to trust that the product you are purchasing has been made with care and concern for the planet.

Certified organic skincare means the product was made with no synthetic pesticides and GMOs, using sustainable farming practices that nurture our planet. By choosing these products, we're not just caring for our skin; we're nurturing the environment that sustains us.

Choosing Certified Natural Certification labels, such as COSMOS (Cosmetic Organic and Natural Standard)provides consumers with assurance that a product meets specific criteria for natural or organic content.

Certifications include but are not limited to: Soil Association Certified, EcoCert, Cosmos, USDA, Cosmebio + more. I found a great guide to certifications in Beauty here

Why is it so crucial to pick certified organic skincare

I know Certified Organic is not always possible, but I always encourage you to try to purchase 1 or 2 items from a certified brand, and there are tons of choices! Please see the full list for the UK on the Soil Association Website for organic brands

1. Environmental Concerns: Conventional farming can wreak havoc on the environment, but certified organic skincare is all about treading lightly. It's about supporting practices that keep our soil healthy, our water clean, and our ecosystems thriving.

2. Saving Our Wildlife: Organic farming isn't just good for us humans; it benefits wildlife too. Organic Farming creates habitats for pollinators, preserves biodiversity, and gives endangered species a fighting chance.

3. Making Your Voice Heard: Your choices matter. By opting for certified organic skincare, you're sending a powerful message to companies and policymakers alike.

4. Living your Values: When you live in alignment with your values, there is less dissonance between who you are being and who you wish to be, allowing for more internal peace.

So, as we celebrate Earth Day, I encourage you to consider choosing certified organic skincare and supporting the businesses making a difference.
