The best cleansers and makeup removers that will make you glow
Clean skin is the basis of a good skincare routine. A good cleanser should remove dirt, makeup, sunscreen and anything else on your skin, without stripping or drying.
To Double or To Single?
A good cleansing routine is essential to skin health. Double Cleansing is when you use 2 different cleansers to wash your face. To be honest, I don’t always do it, but I learned the importance of this 2 step process years ago from Dija who really drove home the difference between taking your makeup off and removing surface dirt, and deep cleansing your skin. If you wear makeup, it is wise to remove makeup first and then cleanse the skin with a different cleanser. In summer, I really recommend a double cleanse to effectively remove sunscreen as well.
In general, the first step of a double cleanse involves an oil or balm cleanser to melt away the makeup, while the second cleanser can be a bit milkier or gel-like to clean the pores. However, some people use the same cleanser twice or some people reverse the order. It really depends on your skin and what you need each day.
I tend to double cleanse if I am wearing a lot of makeup, but on the day-to-day when I have not been creating amazing tutorials for you, I tend to do a single cleanse with a jelly/balm cleanser. This is my favourite texture to wash my face, with my current faves being Biossance, Ren and Romilly Wilde, but a long-time favourite has also been the Evolve Jelly Cleanser.
If I am wearing a lot of makeup, I also use an eye makeup remover or micellar water to get rid of mascara and really clean around my eyes and lashes.
Technique
I used to only cleanse at night but now I quite like a face massage with my silicone cleansing pads or Foreo in the morning. I always(*) cleanse at night, even if i have no makeup on.
I always massage the cleanser into my skin, loosening oil and makeup, I then rinse with water or a cloth. Using a cloth to wash your face helps gently eliminate dry and dead skin cells that sit on the surface, just watch out for over-scrubbing! I have become quite attached to silicone cleansing pads and my Foreo Luna for gentle cleansing and exfoliation for brighter skin. I use this tool most mornings to boost circulation.
Once I get the first layer of cleansing done I go for a gel wash if I need to. I usually massage the cleanser onto damp skin and rinse it off with water. Massaging the cleanser into the skin is also a great opportunity for a little face massage and to take a little time out for you. Always makeup sure to clean along your hairline and your neck as welll!
